An assistant village headman was shot dead by suspected militants in Bachao district of Narathiwat province on Monday evening.

The victim was identified as Jaeni Jaema, 62, assistant chief of Ban Talo Lae Jae in tambon Lubo Sawor.
Pol Lt Wittaya Kwankam, a duty officer at Bachao police station, said the shooting happened when Jaeni was returning home on motorcycle after watching a football match in front of the Talo Manor Tambon Administration Organisation office. Two gunmen on motorcycle fired five shots at him and fled the scene.
Jaeni took bullets to his torso and died on the spot. Police blamed southern seperatists.
