The Rangae district chief and five defence volunteers escaped unhurt when a road bomb exploded when they were travelling in an armoured pickup truck to the Narathiwat provincial hall on Wednesday morning.
Police said the attack occurred about 10.30am when Traithip Sakulpradit and five defence volunteers were travelling in the district chief's armoured vehicle along the Chanae - Dusongyo road in tambon Phadungmat.
As the vehicle neared Ban Cha-ae, a bomb planted on the road was detonated remotely. The explosion badly damaged the vehicle, but the district chief and the other occupants survived unscathed.
A police explosive ordnance disposal team that examined the scene said the bomb weighed about 80kg and was inside a gas cylinder.
