Drought conditions not usually seen until February have hit the Moei River, affecting trade and tap-water supplies along the Thai-Myanmar border.

The sandy bed of the river was visible in places adjacent to Mae Sot district of Tak province on Monday, hampering river traffic. Trenches were dug through the sand in places to let cargo through.

The Mae Sot waterworks authority had to resort to the same solution to pump water from the Moei River for production of tap water for residents. Rationing has been imposed.
