The Sunday municipal council elections went smoothly with 29 complaints including eight election fraud claims, a senior police officer said on Monday.
Pol Gen Damrongsak Kittiprapat, deputy national police chief, said the local polls to select mayors and municipal councillors to serve on 2,472 municipal councils, went ahead without any major incidents.
Of 29 complaints filed with police, eight involved election irregularities in six provinces: Rayong, Buri Ram, Yasothon, Nakhon Ratchasima, Khon Kaen and Nakhon Si Thammarat.
Other complaints dealt with tearing up ballot papers, selling alcoholic beverages which is banned on election day, and violating campaign rules.
Pol Gen Damrongsak said a re-election was likely in Ratchaburi where a candidate for mayorship in tambon Don Sai was shot and killed and the remaining candidates did not get enough votes to win the contest.
Under local election laws, a candidate who fails to garner more votes than the "no votes" is barred from contesting the re-election.
In the high-profile election of Saen Suk mayor in Chon Buri, Narongchai Khunploem, son of Somchai "Kamnan Poh" Khunplome, was leading the race with 11,980 votes.
It would be Mr Narongchai's third consecutive term as Saen Suk mayor if he was declared the winner.
In Chiang Mai, the Buranupakorn family was expected to retain the mayoral seat with its representative Atsanee Buranupakorn leading the contest with 19,198 votes.
However, newcomers fared better in several provinces.
In Pattani's Muang district, political novice Niannuwa Sulaiman led with 11,114 votes to former mayor Pitak Korkiatpitak's 8,916.
The municipal council elections were the second nationwide local polls that proceeded since the May 2014 coup. The PAO polls were the first to be held on Dec 20 last year.
Final results are expected in the coming days.
