Mingkwan eyes new party

The former leader of the New Economics Party (NEP) Mingkwan Sangsuwan says he will set up a new political party for the next election.

Mr Mingkwan, a former deputy prime minister, said on Wednesday the party will be named "Okas Thai" (Thai opportunity). The party will be represented by the colours green and pink. Green means an opportunity for farmers while pink represents modernity, young people, and opportunity for diverse groups in society, he said. Mr Mingkwan said the party will uphold democracy and focus on tackling economic problems affecting people's daily life. He will be the leader.

Mr Mingkwan's move ends speculation that he would join the economic team of the Setthakij Thai Party which meets tomorrow. The new team will be led by former finance minister Thirachai Phuvanatnaranubala, according to sources.

On Feb 17, Mr Mingkwan announced his resignation as a list MP of the NEP during a general debate. His resignation was unexpected although he and five fellow party MPs are known to not be on the same page since Mr Mingkwan quit as party leader in 2019 in a move widely viewed as tactical.

His stepping down in 2019 was thought to help free the party from his pre-election promise not to do business with the Palang Pracharath Party (PPRP) and allow some party members to join the PPRP.
