Briton Hall faces third libel charge

Natural Fruit Co has filed a third defamation charge against migrant rights advocate Andy Hall.

The British national met Bang Na police officers on Saturday night to acknowledge the additional charge, but refused to sign any documents.

Mr Hall claimed on his Facebook page that police had refused to provide a translator and presented the documents to sign in Thai language only.

He vowed to lodge a formal complaint against the officers.

If police take the latest lawsuit to court, Mr Hall will likely be summonsed to appear at Phra Khanong Provincial Court.

The activist was notified on Friday by the British embassy that he had been accused of :"broadcasting false statements in the public media'' by the Prachuap Khiri Khan-based canned fruit firm.

The charge relates to the release of a FinnWatch-commissioned human rights report by Mr Hall in January which accused the firm of violating the rights of migrant workers.

Natural Fruit has filed multiple criminal and civil defamation lawsuits against the activist.

Mr Hall faces a maximum of two years in prison for criminal defamation and an additional five years maximum under the Criminal Computer Crime Act if convicted. Natural Fruit is also seeking US$10 million in damages in its civil suit.

Mr Hall has not appeared before court for any of the charges. He was reported at one time to have left the country
