An army sergeant has filed a defamation complaint with police against former Pheu Thai Party MP Watana Muangsuk who accused him of assault, police said.
Pol Lt Sumitre Akkaranet, of Muang Prachin police station, said Sgt Wissanupong Konpian, 29, of the 2nd Infantry Division in Prachin Buri province, lodged the complaint with police just hours after Mr Watana also filed a complaint with Nonthaburi police along with evidence implicating the sergeant in the assault.
Sgt Wissanupong brought a copy of a news report from a local newspaper on Sunday saying Mr Watana accused him of assaulting him as evidence.
Mr Watana said the attack happened last Saturday evening when he was about to get into his car after playing football with friends at Muang Thong Thani in Nonthaburi's Pak Kret district.
He said a man with a crew cut, who was about 175cm tall and wore a pink T-shirt and shorts, punched him on the back of the head about three times before running away.
He showed police and the media a photograph of a white Honda car parked behind his car. He said a check later found Sgt Wissanupong owned the car and called on the National Council for Peace and Order to explain why the sergeant was there at that time.
