3-in-1 Paper Desk for Opportunities & Sustainability
During field trips to remote corners of the country, SCG Packaging X World Vision Foundation of Thailand found that many students lacked a desk, both at school and at home. More often than not, children in remote areas had to lie or sit down on the floor and bend their knees to read and write. Such unhealthy positions threatened to cause back pain, neck pain, and vision problems.
So the foundation and SCG Packaging came up with an initiative to give versatile “3-in-1 paper desks” to children under its care.
Mr.Suchai Korprasertsri, Chief Operating Officer, Consumer and Industrial Packaging Business, SCG Packaging, recently handed over 25,000 sets of 3-in-1 paper desks to Dr.Sarawut Rachasrimuang, Country Director at World Vision Thailand, for distribution to children in the World Vision Foundation of Thailand nationwide network.
“3-in-1 paper desks” are made of recycled lightweight yet durable paper. The desks serve three functions – a desk for reading/writing, a box to contain learning materials, and a bag to carry books around. The desks are biodegradable and completely recyclable and come with a manual on how to use them plus instructions printed on the desks.
Mr. Direk Insakul, Designer of SCG Packaging said, “The foundation wants lightweight, easy-to-carry-around and versatile desks, so we chose paper as the key material. Ergonomically designed to support children’s physical features, our desks are durable. Children can assemble their desks by themselves. We have also integrated learning gimmicks so that children can have fun finding out things and getting tips. After the desk is worn out, it can easily be recycled. We are glad to see children enjoy assembling their desks and making good use of them.”
Ms.Nattaviga Sukphiromkasem, Acquisition and Engagement Division Manager, World Vision Thailand, said, “After we decided to procure desks for children, we looked into how we could make them light, portable, and eco-friendly. So we contacted SCG Packaging as we hoped our desks would be made of paper. Then we worked with SCG Packaging for nearly a year developing the 3-in-1 paper desk. Through this collaboration, we have seen clearly that SCG Packaging is truly professional.”
“It is very easy to assemble the desk, as the instructions are easy to understand,” commented Miss Polaywanday, a student in Ratchaburi’s Suan Phung district. “I am excited to get this desk back home where I will share it with my siblings.”
