RBSO Presents Classical Concert No. 4 entitled The Sophistication of Three Geniuses

Under the Royal Patronage of Her Royal Highness Princess Sirivannavari Nariratana Rajakanya, the Royal Bangkok Symphony Orchestra Foundation and Tourism Authority of Thailand (TAT) are delighted to present RBSO Classical Concert No. 4 of the 2020 season. The performance is on Thursday, 15 October 2020 at 7:30PM at the Thailand Cultural Centre, Small Hall.

The program features three pieces by composers regarded as musical geniuses. The first, Richard Wagner’s Siegfried Idyll is a symphonic poem written for a chamber orchestra. He composed the piece in 1869 for his wife as a birthday present after the birth of their second son, Siegfried. Originally, Wagner had intended for Siegfried Idyll to remain a private piece but because of financial pressures, he sold the score in 1873 and expanded the orchestration to 35 players in order to be more marketable. This later orchestration is commonly how it is played now.

Second, Le Tombeau de Couperin composed by Maurice Ravel between 1914 and 1917, is one of his most notable works. Originally written for a solo piano, Ravel also wrote an orchestra version in 1919 which omitted two of the original movements. He wrote each of the original six movements dedicated to a friend or one of his two brothers who perished in World War I. It is a light-hearted composition rather than sombre because, according to Ravel, “The dead are sad enough in their eternal silence.”

Third is Symphony No. 2 in B-flat major, D. 125 by Austrian composer Franz Schubert. This is a four-part symphony. The opening movement is based on the corresponding theme in Beethoven’s overture to The Creatures of Prometheus. Despite his short life (Schubert died at 31), he was an extremely prolific composer and is ranked among the greatest composers of Western classical music.

Michel Tilkin, from Belgium, will be conducting the RBSO for the evening. He enjoys a busy career on the podium internationally, having developed lasting relationships with numerous eminent ensembles since the start of the new millennium.

We hope you will be able to join us Thursday, 15 October at 7:30PM for this evening of beautiful music at the Thailand Cultural Centre.
