On August 27th, 2023, Dr. Wang Xiaojun, Dean of the School of Music at Nanjing University of the Arts, embarked on a memorable journey to Thailand's Krirk University with a nine-member delegation. Among them were prominent figures like Dr. Wei Wei, Vice Dean, Associate Professor Liu Qiang, and Associate Professor Tong Ying, Associate Director of the Department of Folk Music.
Their trip did more than solidify a collaborative bond between the two universities; it treated attendees to an unparalleled artistic and academic extravaganza by Nanjing University of the Arts’ elite. The day saw the blossoming of a new friendship enriched by the diverse cultures of both institutions.
Prof. Dr. Krasae Chanawongse, President of Krirk University, joined Dr. Li Liguang, Vice Chairman of the University Council, and Dr. Wang Xiaojun in delivering enlightening speeches. They delved deep into the nuances of Chinese and Thai cultures and charted the histories of both universities. Their joint vision crystalised with the establishment of the China-Thai Art and Culture Exchange Centre, aimed at nurturing future cultural and academic exchanges.
Dr. Wang Xiaojun’s lecture on the “Explanation of the original meaning of the word ‘music’ in oracle bone inscriptions” was a highlight, providing insight into the ancient charm of oracle bone inscriptions.
The music resonated with pieces like “Spring in Jiangnan”, a heart-wrenching melody "A Parting Tune with a Thrice Repeated Refrain", the enchanting “Tanci Yun”, and the evocative erhu-piano duet, “The Moon Sets below the River”. Notably, the rendition of Thailand's iconic “The Loy Krathong Festival” by the Nanjing University of the Arts artists using traditional Chinese instruments symbolised the deep-rooted ties between China and Thailand.
Krirk University's dancers, on the other hand, brought to life the “Thai Blessing Dance” and the riveting "Northern Thailand Long Armour Dance". This cultural exchange was more than just stage performances; it was a testament to shared legacies and the power of artistic heritage.
In this remarkable exchange, Krirk University and Nanjing University of the Arts proved that art transcends borders, and that music and culture can foster friendships that language barriers cannot impede.
