On July 26, 2023, Panasonic, in collaboration with the Economic Crime Suppression Division under the Royal Thai Police (“ECD Police”) and Lazada Thailand, successfully apprehended a major seller of counterfeit batteries operating on online platforms. This operation resulted in the seizure of more than 400,000 fake Panasonic batteries with a total estimated value of over 17 million baht. This represents the highest number of seized counterfeit Panasonic products in Thailand and Southeast Asia to date. All individuals apprehended in the raid are now facing criminal charges related to trademark infringement under the Thai Trademark Act, carrying a maximum penalty of imprisonment for up to four years, a fine of up to 400,000 baht, or both.
This achievement was made possible through the effective collaboration between the ECD Police, Lazada Thailand, and Panasonic.
Panasonic's partnership with law enforcement agencies aligns with Lazada’s commitment to maintaining a secure and trustworthy platform for consumers, brands, and sellers. This commitment is underpinned by strong governance practices that prioritize responsible business conduct for all stakeholders.
The ECD Police are resolute in their efforts to combat intellectual property infringement activities in Thailand, fostering confidence among consumers, business owners, and organisations across various sectors. The protection of intellectual property is a crucial driver of Thailand's economy and ensures consumer safety and well-being.
In line with this commitment, the ECD continues to conduct investigations and apprehensions related to intellectual property infringements. The recent case involving the seizure of over 400,000 counterfeit Panasonic batteries on July 26, 2023, is a testament to their dedication. This operation followed an investigation into counterfeit products being sold through an online platform. The ECD's success in this operation reflects its determination to eliminate potentially harmful counterfeit goods from the market, safeguarding consumers' lives, health, and property.
The ECD is proud to collaborate with Panasonic in protecting its intellectual property rights. This recent significant arrest and seizure will reduce the availability of counterfeit batteries in the market, benefitting the community and consumers at large. The ECD remains committed to protecting the intellectual property rights of owners and entrepreneurs across all sectors in the future.
In its commitment to ensuring consumer safety, Panasonic, in accordance with its zero-tolerance policy, will continue monitoring both physical and online marketplaces. Panasonic will collaborate closely with authorities such as the ECD and e-commerce operators like Lazada to safeguard the interests of buyers and sellers on their platform.
Panasonic urges the public and consumers to exercise caution when purchasing goods, especially those sold through online platforms.
Panasonic sincerely thanks you for your trust in our company and products. We remain dedicated to our mission of combating counterfeit goods to protect our valued customers.
