Bangkok Insurance and the Department of Mental Health, Ministry of Public Health, recognise the importance of mental health, particularly the increasing prevalence of depression and its social implications. To address this issue, they have collaborated to organise a press conference under the theme "Promoting Mental Health for Sustainable Protection." The objective was to raise public awareness about depression and educate family members and caregivers on providing compassionate care to sufferers. Additionally, a commercial advertisement was released portraying depression not as a mere emotional response but as a treatable illness by mental health professionals. The advertisement features narratives from two individuals: Mr. Pongkool Suebsung, also known as Pop-Pongkool, a humorous artist, and Mr. Natee Ekwijit, also known as Oui-Buddha Bless, who shared his experience as a therapist. The press conference took place at The Glass House, Nai Lert Park, on March 6, 2024.
Dr. Pongkasem Khaimook, Director-General of the Department of Mental Health, addressed the depression situation in Thailand, stating, “Despite advancements in technology worldwide, mental health issues remain prevalent among Thai individuals. Stress, depression, anxiety, and drug use are common in today’s society." He highlighted a significant increase in mental health patients, with 2.3 million cases in 2021 compared to 1.3 million in 2015. Recent data from the Ministry of Public Health's HDC reporting system indicates a 12.09% increase in outpatient care for drug and mental health patients in 2023. Estimates suggest that 1.5 million adults in Thailand over the age of 15 suffer from depression, with only one in three receiving treatments. Delaying treatment could exacerbate mental health problems, potentially leading to suicide. Dr. Khaimook emphasised the importance of collaboration across sectors to support mental health, including involvement from private organisations. He expressed appreciation for Bangkok Insurance's efforts in raising awareness of mental health, particularly regarding depression, stating that such partnerships are crucial for addressing mental health concerns affecting all Thai people.
Dr. Apisit Anantanatarat, Chief Executive Officer and President of Bangkok Insurance Public Company Limited, further commented, “This represents a sustainable organisational development policy prioritising corporate operations in alignment with effective risk management and good governance values, catering to all stakeholder groups, and advocating for a high standard of living for individuals within society, communities, and the environment. Specifically, the organisation emphasises collaboration with diverse network organisations by endorsing initiatives aimed at providing care and assistance to the underprivileged, thus contributing to the resolution of societal issues.”
He continued, “Thai society grapples with compounded stress arising from precarious social positions, diverse issues, and external circumstances. Depression manifests as both conscious and unconscious weaknesses on physical and mental fronts, leading to a negative self-image. Without proper advice or care, this may escalate to self-harm or suicide, squandering a valuable societal resource. Presently, the incidence of depression is on the rise, prompting Bangkok Insurance to engage in addressing this issue. Apart from promoting psychological well-being for long-term immunity, we collaborated with the Department of Mental Health, Ministry of Public Health, to educate people about mental health, especially focusing on depression sufferers and those around them who need to be vigilant regarding symptoms. Counselling from mental health professionals is pivotal in treating depression. To facilitate comprehensive communication, the company has produced campaign media such as commercial ads and has planned various activities throughout the year to educate Thai people about the issue and how to support those affected. Moreover, our support extends beyond patients to their immediate circles, such as family or friends, who must understand, interact with, and provide appropriate care for depressed individuals to prevent long-term complications,” Dr. Apisit said.
Bangkok Insurance Public Company Limited and the Department of Mental Health unveiled a commercial ad during the press conference with the aim of educating people to recognise depression as a treatable illness. This is essential as a majority of Thais perceive depression as a weakness that does not necessitate a doctor's visit. However, depression is a condition experienced by many and akin to other bodily illnesses, influenced by various factors including physical, mental, and environmental conditions. In the commercial ad, renowned artist Mr. Pongkool Suebsung (Pop-Pongkool) delivers the message, aiming to educate people about depression as a medical condition requiring proper treatment from a doctor, rather than just a matter of emotions or a sign of weakness. Additionally, anyone can seek advice by calling the Department of Mental Health hotline at 1323.
Furthermore, Dr. Varoth Chotpitayasunondh, Ph.D., spokesperson for the Department of Mental Health at the Ministry of Public Health, participated in the discussion on the topic of "Promoting Mental Health for Sustainable Protection" and shared insights on supporting individuals with depression. He emphasised, “The increasing prevalence of depression constitutes a societal problem requiring immediate prevention and intervention. The initial solution lies in creating a safe environment for individuals to express their feelings when facing such circumstances.
Offering advice may seem straightforward with phrases like 'Keep fighting!' but understanding the struggles of those with depression and acknowledging their circumstances is crucial. While some advise against telling depressed individuals to persevere, understanding their struggles or seeing their situation from their perspective can provide suitable support. Additionally, simply being present and listening can serve as valuable support, as not everyone has someone to confide in. Being a listener yourself can be one of the most beneficial things you can do for someone struggling with depression.”
Furthermore, the commercial's presenter and singer, Mr. Pongkool Suebsung (Pop-Pongkool), and Mr. Natee Ekwijit (Oui-Buddha Bless), a TV host and artist/therapist, participated in a discussion to raise awareness about supporting and caring for those with depression, and preventing depression in oneself.
To gain a deeper understanding of depression, the advertisement will be available on social media and TV starting today. For those seeking mental health advice, please contact the Department of Mental Health hotline at 1323.
