At the core of every structure lies the enduring partnership of “cement and concrete” – essential elements that blend functionality, not only to meet the need for use and durability but also the aspect of beauty. ‘Concrete in Life’ is the annual photography competition initiated by the Global Cement and Concrete Association (GCCA) for five years in a row. This year’s exhibition is featured at the “GCCA CEO Gathering and Leaders Conference 2024” taking place for the first time in Bangkok, Thailand, showcasing the results of this year’s contest and a curated collection captured by photographers worldwide. From Urban Concrete to the intricate interplay of Concrete Infrastructure, Concrete in Daily Life, Beauty and Design, these images explore concrete’s diverse facets, as well as its role in sustainability and the environment.
Dr Chana Poomee, Chairman of the Thai Cement Manufacturers Association (TCMA) and a member of the GCCA executive board, emphasised, “Cement is the primary ingredient in concrete production. Currently, advancements in materials science, construction technology, and design rely on concrete structures that have evolved to fulfil criteria of functionality, aesthetic appeal, and carbon reduction. Achieving Net Zero by 2050 stands as a pivotal goal for the cement and concrete industry. The GCCA annual photography competition ‘Concrete in Life’ is a commendable initiative as it artfully reflects the perspectives of concrete users and explores the human-concrete relationship. The photographs around the world in ‘Concrete in Life’ reflect a fresh perspective on concrete’s integration into daily life, blending strength, durability, and beauty.”
Mr Paul Adeleke, Strategy, Communications & Policy Director at GCCA, said, “GCCA has been running the ‘Concrete in Life’ competition consecutively since 2019, and it has always been a pleasure. In its first year, GCCA received approximately 5,000 submissions, which increased to 21,000 last year, spanning categories: Urban Concrete, Concrete Infrastructure, Concrete in Daily Life, Beauty and Design. Through these photos, the diverse utility of concrete has been presented. Through the lens of photographers, concrete is a necessity around the daily lives of people around the world. ‘Concrete in Life’ aims to connect the world to the commitment of the cement and concrete industry to the GCCA Concrete Future towards sustainability and Net Zero by 2050.”
‘Concrete in Life’, GCCA’s annual photography competition, is open to all photographers or anyone with a camera phone around the world. To keep in touch with the contest and story, visit GCCA Concrete in Life.
