Dow (NYSE: Dow) and Makita Manufacturing (Thailand) Co., Ltd, a globally renowned power tool brand, have announced the adoption of plastic cling film incorporating Post-Consumer Recycled (PCR) resin for product logistics. In collaboration with MMP, Thailand's leading packaging film manufacturer, the new film demonstrates quality comparable to virgin plastics while diverting over 5 tons of plastic waste from landfills annually. Makita Manufacturing’s commitment to sustainability positions Thailand as a potential model for expanding this innovative film solution to other countries.
The film incorporates up to 30% PCR resin while maintaining the clarity and performance of traditional cling film, including exceptional strength, toughness, and flexibility. It is ideal for wrapping industrial crates for transportation, whether manually or with machinery, and aims to reduce plastic waste by over 5 tons per year. Additionally, the film is fully recyclable.
“As we advance our efforts to reduce single-use plastics, we are excited to contribute to a sustainable society and preserve biodiversity by minimising plastic waste in our oceans. Since May, we have actively reduced single-use plastics in our product packaging and begun using the sustainable cling film introduced by Dow and MMP. We are committed to identifying and adopting such innovative solutions widely, ensuring seamless integration into our logistics process,” said Kurono Hideaki, Managing Director, Makita Manufacturing (Thailand) Co., Ltd.
"As a leading manufacturer of sustainable cling film in Thailand, MMP is dedicated to providing high-quality products that meet our customers’ needs. This is why we have chosen to use Dow's new recycled plastic blend, which has been rigorously tested and proven to deliver the same high performance as our standard film, even with 30% recycled content. Our PCR-incorporated films are certified under the Global Recycled Standard (GRS), ensuring that our products adhere to strict environmental and social criteria. We are proud to be part of the effort to make Thailand’s industry more sustainable by providing eco-friendly film solutions that reduce greenhouse gas emissions and minimise waste," stated Anake Chongsathien, Chief Executive Officer, MMP Corporation Ltd.
“Congratulations to Makita Thailand for becoming one of the first companies in Asia to adopt PCR-incorporated cling film for commercial use. We appreciate the trust placed in Dow by Makita and MMP to utilise our REVOLOOP™ recycled plastic resins, certified under GRS for plastics recycling traceability and conformity assessment of recycled content. This collaboration has resulted in a logistics cling film that performs on par with 100% virgin plastic. Dow is committed to supporting our customers in reducing their carbon footprint and minimising plastic waste, in line with circular economy principles, enabling them to achieve tangible sustainability goals and foster sustainable growth,” added Ekkasit Lakkananithiphan, Director of Business and Low Carbon Business Development, Dow Thailand.
Makita Manufacturing (Thailand) Co., Ltd. began using Dow's recycled plastic film for wrapping its products destined for domestic and export shipments in May 2024. The company plans to evaluate the performance of this sustainable solution and explore opportunities to expand its adoption to other countries in the future.
