Bangkok Art Biennale 2024 invites art enthusiasts and visitors to experience “The Horde,” an extraordinary installation by Thai artist Haritorn Akarapat, set against the iconic backdrop of Wat Arun (Temple of Dawn). This mesmerising display of 15 towering fiberglass sculptures, ranging from 2 to 5 metres in height, offers a compelling exploration of relationships, tension, and the beauty of imperfection.
A Unique Dialogue Through Art
Organised by the Bangkok Art Biennale Foundation in collaboration with Thai Beverage Public Company Limited, The Horde embodies the festival’s theme of uniting contemporary art with cultural landmarks. Coated in a glossy white finish, the sculptures seamlessly blend with the luminous tones of Wat Arun, reflecting both the surrounding light and the temple’s spiritual aura.
Each piece is distinct, with intricate details such as long, sword-like noses and surface imperfections that create a silent dialogue among the sculptures. The arrangement encourages visitors to walk among them, engaging with the interplay of form, light, and shadow.
The Artist’s Vision
Haritorn Akarapat, known for weaving Buddhist concepts and symbolism into his work, presents The Horde as a commentary on modern society. Drawing inspiration from traditional sacred objects, the sculptures abstractly reference the phallus, symbolising divine creative power. The towering forms evoke a sense of powerful beings, while their flaws and distortions reflect the tensions of contemporary life, shaped by media and the sugar-coated portrayal of suffering.
Celebrating Art and Culture
At the opening event, Professor Dr. Apinan Poshyananda, Chief Executive and Artistic Director of Bangkok Art Biennale, and Phra Khru Samutprakon Supatitto, Assistant Abbot of Wat Arun, joined the artist to discuss the inspiration and deeper meanings behind the installation.
Set within the serene garden of Wat Arun, The Horde offers a thought-provoking experience, inviting visitors to reflect on societal realities through the lens of modern art and Buddhist philosophy.
