Novo Nordisk Launches Blockchain to Fight Counterfeit Drugs

Novo Nordisk Thailand has announced the successful implementation of a blockchain-based traceability solution to verify the authenticity of Ozempic® across the supply chain, addressing the growing threat of counterfeit medicines and enhancing patient safety.

Counterfeit pharmaceuticals can contain incorrect or harmful ingredients, posing significant health risks. These illicit products are often distributed through unregulated online platforms and social media, where enforcement is challenging.

To combat this, Novo Nordisk Thailand has adopted eZTracker, a digital verification solution developed by Zuellig Pharma. This system uses a 2D data matrix sticker on each sales pack, enabling each product to be uniquely identified and traced. Initially rolled out for Ozempic® in Thailand, the solution represents a proactive step in safeguarding patients.

“We remain committed to raising awareness about counterfeit medicines. Patient safety is our top priority,” said Mr Enrico Cañal Bruland, General Manager of Novo Nordisk Pharma (Thailand) Ltd. “Our collaboration with Zuellig Pharma helps ensure product authenticity and protect patients from harm.”

Healthcare professionals, pharmacists, and patients can verify Ozempic® products in real-time by scanning the 2D QR pink sticker or entering the product code in the eZTracker app. A successful scan confirms the product is genuine and displays detailed information. If the scan fails, it may indicate a counterfeit product, and users are encouraged to report such cases through the app.

“This marks a major milestone in our efforts to combat counterfeit drugs and strengthen confidence among both patients and healthcare professionals,” Mr Cañal Bruland added. “We believe this solution will reinforce trust and ensure the well-being of those who depend on Novo Nordisk products.”
