Following its world premiere in Hollywood, Pabrik Gula or “The Sugar Factory” has set a new benchmark for Indonesian cinema, becoming the highest-grossing Indonesian film on its opening day in 2025. The film, which has reached more than 1 million admissions, is inspired by Indonesian folklore and historical myths surrounding the country’s sugar mills, has resonated with audiences both domestically and internationally. The film is helmed by Awi Suryadi, the acclaimed director behind Indonesia’s highest grossing film, KKN di Desa Penari, and produced by Manoj Punjabi, producer, founder and CEO of MD Pictures.

Drawing from real events, Pabrik Gula blends cultural horror with historical narratives, contributing to its widespread appeal. The film marks the latest collaboration between US-Thai outfit EST N8 and MD Pictures, following their work on Perewangan with renowned director Awi Suryadi. With Pabrik Gula, EST N8 continues to expand its role in bringing Southeast Asian horror to the global stage.

MD Entertainment, known for its efforts in international distribution, played a key role in the film’s development. Their collaboration with IMAX has introduced a new level of immersive horror storytelling, as previously seen in Badarawuhi di Desa Penari (Dancing Village: The Curse Begins). The success of Pabrik Gula reinforces the growing global interest in Southeast Asian horror cinema.

The film’s record-breaking opening highlights a strong demand for locally rooted yet universally engaging stories. As Pabrik Gula continues its theatrical run, it is expected to further solidify Indonesia’s presence in the international horror film market.
