Housekeeper, policeman killed in drive-by attacks

Two drive-by attacks have killed a housekeeper and a policeman in the latest unrest in the far South.

Waraphon Hamidong, who also works for Tano Pute Tambon Administration Organisation, succumbed to severe gun wounds to her head and back after a man riding pillion opened fire at her on a village road in Yala's Bannang Sata district early Wednesday. Ms Waraphon was walking along the road to buy food when she was attacked. Police believe the gunman used a pistol in the attack.

In Pattani, a chief police investigator was killed and a junior policeman wounded by gunmen in Sai Buri district on Tuesday evening.

Pol Lt Samart Rattanapong, a duty officer at Sai Buri station, said Pol Maj Rathanan Maphaew and Pol L/Cpl Nikom Phetkaew, both of Mayo station, were returning from Kapho district to Mayo district in a pickup truck when they were attacked by four men who had followed them on two motorcycles.

On Highway 4060 near Tuepi Rubo village in tambon Manang Dalam in Sai Buri district, the men opened fire, hitting Pol Maj Rathanan in the abdomen and the right shoulder and Pol L/Cpl Nikom, who was driving the pickup, in the back.

The culprits fled after the attack, which occurred about 6.30pm. The two were admitted to Kapho Hospital where Pol Maj Rathanan was later pronounced dead.
